Odyssey 2022 Day One

 Day 1,

I was up past midnight making preparations so I did not get the crack of dawn start that I had planned. Going to shove off in about an hour 0900. I will try and make the South Mill loch at 1330 and then the deep Creek at 3:30. I should make the Waterside docks around 1800.

Last Minute Preparations Were Compass Mount and Tiller Minder. Foolish to Try to Navigate Without These Two Items in Good Working Order!

Update: always check your Coast Guard advisories. The railroad bridge at the end of the canal is closed until tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. there is no way around it. I will call the bridge tender and make sure it is going to be open before I start my trip, which now begins on Sunday.

Leaving the South Mills Lock

Update: crossed under the Elizabeth City bridge at 8:05 a.m. on Sunday. Heading up the icw. There are groups of cormorants all over the pasquotank river fishing for their morning breakfast. Yesterday was 80° but today is cool and crisp with a stiff breeze wind gusting over 20 knots for most of the day. Because of that I am not going to put up any sail and rely completely on the motor. I hope the old Atomic 4 holds out.

Update: life is good. I went ahead and reconfigured the Scarlott Waters. Now she's set up for short trips and spending the night on board. Check out the full size bed which now dominates the cabin!    thanks to the wonderful friends who helped me along the way to this destination. Hanging out in Baltimore... What a beautiful morning! I started out as planned with all winds and tides as predicted, motoring out of Solomon's Island at 6:45 a.m. into a beautiful sunrise with only the main sail up, (still reefed from the day before). I knew I had a two hour cussing built into my trip which should take about 10 hours putting me at my destination around 430 pm.  I decided to lose the reefing lines and put the main sail all the way up and began preparing to do so. Then at 8:20 a.m. the motor quit. It acted like an electrical problem but I double checked  anyway to make sure it was not fuel. Checked the coil. Odyssey 2022 Day 3 March 22

Happy birthday Emily! Today I made great time partially under power and under sail. I left Portsmouth free docks at 8am and arrived at Willoughby Marina just before noon. I was fortunate to see a diver already at work and was able to get the hull of the Scarlott Waters cleaned off which should make the time of my trip a little shorter. I pumped out the black water tank and made repairs to the water pump on the Atomic 4 which had ingested a piece of impeller. I cleaned out the blockage, installed a fresh impeller, and the engine now runs cool as a cucumber. I decided to try to make it over to Hampton by sail, and left Willoughby at 2pm. The wind was perfect and I zoomed past the intended stop only to find I had a much longer way to go than I had planned.after crossing the York River. Sunset over the York River- It was after dark when I pulled into hook Harbor and dropped anchor for the night.

living aboard the Scarlott Waters

  Now that she is docked just up the river from the sunken cargo ship "Ever Forward" Things aboard have begun to settle into a routine.  The wind and torrential rainstorms which marked the beginning of April In Baltimore really began to let SW begin to show her condition.water seemed to pour in as if three or four faucets were hidden inside and left on a fast drip. After liberal application of waterproof caulking around the hatch and windows, along with the addition of a tightly stretched tarp over the cabin area, the water coming in has abated to a manageable level. (At least the new bed is now remaining dry).
